Fundacion Tecnalia Research & Innovation (TECNALIA)

Fundación TECNALIA Research & Innovation is the leading private and independent research and technology entity in Spain and the fifth largest in Europe, employing 1475 people (188 of whom are PhD holders). Tecnalia operates in all the fields of today and tomorrow’s industry: Industry and Transport, Information and Communication Technologies, Building, Energy and Environment, Innovation Systems and Health and Quality of Life. TECNALIA participates in the High Level Group of the European Technological Platform for Researching in Manufacturing (ManuFuture), coordinating the multi-annual workplan for the "Factories of the Future" JTI/PPP; and is represented in the executive board of the European Technological Platform for Researching in Robotics (EUROP), in the board of the European Robotics Research Network (EURON) and in the Advanced Research & Technology for Embedded Systems (ARTEMIS).

Department involved in the project

TECNALIA Industry and Transport, responds to the needs of sustainable mobility and efficient manufacturing in an increasingly globalised market, providing our clients with an innovative differential that is necessary to position their companies and compete in this environment. Knowing the “drivers” of the markets addressed by the Division, its main activity is focused on the development of solutions for sustainable transport in the future as well as the development of solutions for the factory of the future.

Smart transport systems, electrification, lightening, functional materials and function integration are some of the Division´s research and development lines, that give due response to the transport industry's needs. Flexible manufacturing, efficiency in manufacturing processes, smart manufacturing processes, collaborative robotics and automation, among others, are the research and development lines that bring us closer each day to the factory of the future. The leadership of the project team of TECNALIA in the project will be taken by the Composite Structures & Components area, which is a group formed of 25 scientists and technicians that deal with calculation, design or redesign of components, material characterization, manufacturing technologies, equipment development, prototyping and components testing.

Main contribution to the project

Leader of WP4 (Development of integrated compaction/ fast heating / curing process). Responsible of the development of the multifunctional pick & place and draping robot handled end-effector in WP3. Responsible of the development of suitable curing and process models in WP3 in order to define the appropriate process parameters for the materials and processes developed in WP’s 2 and 4. Relevant participation in WP6 and WP7, where concepts developed in WP3 and WP4 will be implemented first at laboratory scale (WP6) and later in prototype manufacturing cells (WP7). Participation also in Exploitation and Dissemination activities.

Key people involved

Ricardo Mezzacasa: Graduated as Mechanical Engineer at the U. of Navarra (1993). Professional experience started in the field of product development at AP shock absorbers (93-96) and Irizar (coach body builder, 96-98). He joined TECNALIA in 1998, as project manager of the Composite Structures and Components department in the Industry and Transport Division. He is the head of this area since 2002.
